Module Objectives

What this module sets out to do

  • Develop active listening as a core leadership capability — reflecting, probing, and reading nonverbals.
  • Identify your own communication style and learn to recognize and adapt to others.
  • Apply listening and style-flexing in real stakeholder conversations to build influence and connection.
Learning Outcomes

By the end, participants will be able to

  • Distinguish active listening from hearing, multitasking, or rehearsing a response.
  • Use paraphrasing, acknowledging, reframing, and open-ended questions to deepen understanding.
  • Identify the four communication styles — Amiable, Expressive, Analytic, Driver — by pace and focus.
  • Diagnose another person's style in real time and flex their own approach to match.
  • Apply a five-step communication checklist: engage, listen, ask questions, acknowledge, summarize.
Module Structure

Three core sections

Section One

The Power of Listening

We spend 45% of communication time listening — more than speaking, reading, or writing. Learn the elements of active listening: reflecting, probing, and reading nonverbals. Discover what listening is not.

Section Two

Exploring Communication Styles

Identify your own style and learn the four-style framework: Amiable, Expressive, Analytic, Driver. Understand what each style values, seeks, and how they show up under stress — then flex to match.

Amiable Expressive Analytic Driver
Section Three

Putting It All Together

Synthesize listening and style-flexing in a stakeholder conversation. Apply the five-step communication checklist — engage, listen, ask questions, acknowledge, summarize — to real workplace exchanges.

Signature Activities

How the learning comes alive

Communication Challenges

Peer-group discussion: what's most difficult about communicating effectively with internal and external customers? Surface real challenges to anchor the module.

Listening Self-Assessment

Five-minute personal assessment of listening habits, followed by a peer share — what comes naturally, what's a challenge, and why.

Style Assessment

Identify your own communication style across Amiable, Expressive, Analytic, and Driver, then map how others on your team show up.

Three-Role Stakeholder Roleplay

Stakeholder secretly picks a style; Communicator presents a project idea and must listen and flex; Observer tracks both. Rotate roles.
