Leading with EQ, not IQ

Modern Leadership starts with EQ, not IQ. Years ago, while completing my master’s in organizational development, I tried to weave mindful leadership into a corporate training program I was building for a tech company.
My manager at the time—an old-school HR executive—quickly shot it down: "We don’t need any touchy-feely stuff. We need our leaders to get their teams to sell more!"

Flash forward to today, and that paradigm has completely flipped. The best leaders and organizations recognize that emotional intelligence and mindfulness are fundamental to building high-trust, high-performing cultures.

Leadership isn't about having all the answers. It's about how you show up for your team and how you create a culture of trust.

According to Gartner research, three core human-centric leadership skills dominate today:
💚 Authenticity — Leading with transparency and vulnerability to foster psychological safety.
🤝 Empathy — Demonstrating genuine concern for employee well-being and workload balance.
🔄 Flexibility — Adapting management styles and environments to fit individual employee needs.

Over coffee recently with a fellow OD practitioner, we reflected on how refreshing it is to see organizations prioritize psychological safety, growth mindset, and mindfulness.

I start every workshop I lead with a simple "mindful minute"—a brief moment for participants to ground themselves, focus, and tune out external distractions before diving in.

How might you introduce a mindful minute or human-centric leadership skills into your day and team.
